Overturned vehicle’s engine warm, but driver not around

The Maui News

OLOWALU - Police found an overturned vehicle early Tuesday - its engine still warm, but no driver or anyone who may have been in the vehicle - when officers responded to the crash scene near the Olowalu landfill.

Responding to a 1:47 a.m. call, Lahaina patrol officers located a 1996 Nissan sport utility vehicle on its roof on the mauka dirt shoulder of Honoapiilani Highway, police said.

The passenger-side door was open, the key was still in the ignition and the hood of the car was warm, police reported.

A police investigation determined the vehicle had been heading toward Lahaina before the driver lost control and the vehicle hit a raised dirt embankment on the mauka shoulder. The vehicle flipped over onto its roof, ending up on an old cane haul road that runs parallel to the highway, police said.

The vehicle is registered to a Kihei resident. Police said they are attempting to locate the owner.
