Road work planned on five highway sections

Traffic on Maui and Molokai to be affected

KAHULUI - Work scheduled on five roadway sections of Maui and Molokai this week will require road closures or lane closures, including on two areas of Piilani Highway at Kahikinui and Kaupo.

Notices by contractor Maui Paving Co. said there will be full road closures along Piilani Highway while work is under way from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for road grading and repaving of the road sections.

Maui Paving is also continuing resurfacing work on Kamehameha V Highway in East Molokai from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

The state Highways Division said there will be lane closures on Haleakala Highway for installation of traffic signal sensors and on Maunaloa Highway on Molokai for lane striping.

The projects are:

= Piilani Highway resurfacing in the vicinity of Kaupo Store. Work will begin Monday and is expected to be completed by Oct. 31. It will include grading, leveling and paving.

= Piilani Highway resurfacing at Kepuni Gulch at Kahikinui. Work will begin Monday and is expected to be completed by Dec. 3. It will include grading, leveling and paving.

= Haleakala Highway at North Firebreak Road, Keahua Road and Haliimaile Road. Work will begin Monday and continue through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for installation of traffic signal sensor loops. There will be single lane closures on the Pukalani-bound lanes.

= Maunaloa Highway between Kaunakakai and Hoolehua, for pavement striping. Work is continuing Monday-Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with single lane closures.

= Kamehameha V Highway, from Waialua to Halawa. Resurfacing work and repairs to Honoulimaloo Bridge and culverts will continue, with single lane closures. Traffic will be alternated through the construction areas.

Drivers unable to avoid the construction areas are asked to expect delays, drive with caution, and observe all signs and traffic controls.
