Ting tied for sixth after first round of Women’s Mid-Am

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Desiree Ting of Wailuku shot a 2-over-par 74 on Saturday in the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, leaving her in a tie for sixth place.

Ting, who played at Baldwin

High School and the University of Hawaii, had three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey at Barton Hills Country Club.

Kathy Hart-wiger of Birmingham, Ala.,

was in the lead after a 70. The 2002 winner had five birdies and three bogeys, and was penalized a stroke after her ball moved on the 16th green.

Two-time defending champion Meghan Bolger of Oakland Park, Fla., had a 75.

The top 64 players after today's round will advance to match play.
