TWO AGENCIES BENEFIT

The Kiwanis Club of Maui, with the help of members from other Kiwanis clubs on island, painted several buildings at Boy Scout Camp Maluhia on Aug. 23.

The community-service project netted the club a Weinberg Foundation grant of $10,000, which will be donated to Imua Family Services.

The foundation made the award to the club in return for four hours of work with a minimum of 25 members assisting another nonprofit (there were 30 members on the job).

TOUR OF PLANNED PARENTHOOD SET

KIHEI - Planned Parenthood will hold a Women's Health Month-related clinic tour for teenage girls Sept. 24.

The gathering is for girls age 14 and older; girls 12 and 13 may attend with parental consent. Mother's attendance is optional.

The tour will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the clinic, 140 Hoohana St., Suite 303.

Clinic staff will discuss when and why to go to the clinic, choices for preventing infection and planning pregnancies, and how to receive confidential, free or low-cost wo-men's and men's reproductive health care.

Services offered to men and women age 14 and older at the clinic include checks for sexually transmitted diseases, examinations, pregnancy tests, counseling and referrals, educational information, emergency contraception and distribution of birth-control supplies. PREPAREDNESS FAIR TO BE HELD SATURDAY

KAHULUI - A "Family Preparedness Fair," hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be held Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.

There will be displays and demonstrations on water-storage techniques, home gardening, physical fitness and stress management, instruction on first aid and preparation of family emergency kits for use in natural disasters.

Light refreshments will be served. The public is invited. The church is located at 125 Kamehameha Ave.

KOREAN CHICKEN PLATES FOR SALE

LAHAINA - Pre-sale tickets for Korean chicken plates at the Maui County Fair are being sold by Lahainaluna High School's Academy of Hospitality and Tourism; Distributive Education Clubs of America; and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

CAR WASH TO HELP SCOUTS TRAVEL

A car wash to help two dozen Maui County Scouts travel to New Mexico for a 50-mile hike will be held Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Azeka Shopping Center.

The cost will be $5 for cars and $7 for trucks and SUVs. Snacks also will be on sale.

The 24 Scouts plan to go to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for the 12-day trek in June. Cost of the trip is about $2,000 per Scout.

PSAT/SAT PREP CLASS THIS WEEKEND

WAILUKU - A PSAT/SAT-preparation workshop will be held at St. Anthony Junior Senior High School on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Test Success Hawaii will conduct the PowerPoint workshop to help prepare college-bound students for the October PSAT and SAT exams. All high school students may attend, but the emphasis will be on juniors and seniors, said Michael Weddington, college guidance counselor at St. Anthony.

The cost of the workshop is $70, which includes handbooks and answer sheets. Those attending need to bring a pencil; calculators are optional.

BONAR TO SPEAK AT ROTARY CLUB

LAHAINA - The executive director of the Maui Coastal Land Trust will speak to the Rotary Club of Lahaina at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Outback Steakhouse.

Dale Bonar will give an overview of his nonprofit organization that works with private landowners, neighborhoods, community groups and government agencies to protect significant environmental and cultural resources.

The Rotary Club of Lahaina meets Thursdays at 11:45 a.m. at Outback Steakhouse in the Lahaina Gateway Center.

KAHUMOKU TO PLAY AT OCEAN CENTER

MAALAEA - The collaborative efforts of a guest entertainer and attendees at a program in June will bear fruit when the words and music are presented during the Maui Ocean Center's Sea Talk series on Tuesday.

Singer and slack-key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr. will be at the center's Open Ocean Exhibit in Maalaea from 6 to 7 p.m. In June, he and guests at a center program collaborated on the song. This month's presentation is a continuation of that program.

'CHOCOLATE CAPER' BENEFIT SET SUNDAY

The third annual "Chocolate Caper" for people interested in the AAUW and its Maui branch will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at a private residence.

It is set up as a free and fun event for people to learn about the American Association for University Women, its members and activities. Organizers said the education is done "painlessly by consuming outstanding chocolate concoctions!"

They note that at the first Chocolate Caper on Oct. 19, 2006, despite the 7 a.m. earthquake that day, "everyone still showed up.Chocolate conquers all."

AAUW membership is open to anyone with a two-year or higher degree.Its mission is equity in education for girls and women.

The Maui branch meets monthly for a speaker meeting and luncheon, and there are separate groups whose interests include book discussions, needlework, "Lunch Bunch" and "Great Decisions" on international world issues.

LHS CLASS OF 2010 SELLING MALASSADAS

LAHAINA - Lahainaluna High School's Class of 2010 is selling tickets for malassadas to raise money for its junior prom and other activities.

Tickets cost $7 for a bag of 12 malassadas.

This fundraiser is by pre-sale only. Bags can be picked up at the Lahaina Cannery Mall on Sept. 27.

"Buy a ticket, or two, and support the current junior class of Lahainaluna High School," organizers said.

PEACE DAY FESTIVAL AT KEOPUOLANI PARK

KAHULUI - A cross-cultural festival to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace will be held from 1 p.m. to sunset Sunday at the Keopuolani Park amphitheater on the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens grounds.

The free Peace Day Festival will be a time to gather as a community to celebrate and affirm the sponsors' shared vision of peace, according to the event announcement.

The sponsors are Unity of Maui, Kukuipuka Ohana, Maui Peace Action, Mandala Ethnic Arts and the Young Buddhists Association.

There will be music, hula, drumming, food, keiki activities and community information tables.

Among the musicians and speakers will be Lei'ohu Ryder, Emma Veary, Richard Ho'opi'i, Maui Taiko, Marty Dread, Mayor Charmaine Tavares and Ram Dass.
