11th Biennial Textile Society of America Symposium highlights

A host of Oahu venues showcases textile exhibitions and collections in conjunction with the 11th Biennial Textile Society of America Symposium. "Textiles as Cultural Expressions" is the theme of this international arts event featuring:

* "Pride and Practicality: Japanese Immigrant Clothing in Hawaii," through Saturday, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, fee. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

* "WeARTables," through Saturday, Louis Pohl Gallery of Fine Art, 1111 Nuuanu Ave.; free. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

* "Tattered Cultures: Mended Histories," through Sunday, Academy Art Center, 1111 Victoria St.; free. 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

* "Bright and Daring: Japanese Kimono in the Taisho Mode," "Blue and White: Indigo-dyed Japanese Textiles," and "Japanese Prints of Kimono in the Modern Era," through Oct. 5; and "Indonesian Batik From the Christensen Fund Collection," through Oct. 15, Honolulu Academy of Arts; fee.

* "Pacific Island Textiles as Status, Wealth, Genealogy, Supernatural Protection" features items from Fiji, Marshall Islands, Marquesas, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Yap and outer islands of Ulithi, through Oct. 10, Outrigger Waikiki Hotel lobby koa showcase.

* "Fiber Hawaii" sponsored by Hawaii Craftsmen 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, through Oct. 11, The ARTS at Mark's Garage, 1159 Nuuanu Ave.; free.

* "Writing With Thread: Traditional Textiles of Southwest Chinese Minorities" 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, noon-4 p.m. Sunday, through Oct. 31, University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Gallery; free.

* "Ancient Customs, Ancient Stories: Lampung Ceremonial Textiles and Objects" of southern Sumatra, Indonesia, through Oct. 31, UH Hamilton Library Bridge Gallery; free.

* "Pauahi: A Legacy for Hawai'i" featuring kapa implements, feather capes, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, through Dec. 31, Bishop Museum Castle Memorial Building; fee.

* "Fields of Flowers: Woven Carpets and Mughal Treasures" of a mid-17th century India floral tradition, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, noon4 p.m. Sunday, through Dec. 31, East-West Center Gallery; free.
