ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Oakland Athletics catcher Kurt Suzuki, a 2001 Baldwin High School graduate, missed a second consecutive game for the first time this season on Wednesday, sitting out a 14-4 loss to the Texas Rangers because of a bruised hip.
Suzuki suffered a deep bruise to his right hip in a collision at home plate in the second inning of Monday's 4-3 win over the Rangers. Chris Davis ran into Suzuki while being tagged out while trying to score on German Duran's bases-loaded single. Aaron Cunningham's throw from left field beat Davis, and Suzuki turned to his left as Davis made contact and Suzuki went down hard.
After he was attended to by Oakland's head trainer, Steve Sayles, for several minutes, Suzuki stayed in the game.
A's manager Bob Geren held Suzuki out of the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday.
''Kurt's improved today, but he's not going to start,'' Geren told MLB.com on Wednesday. ''Hopefully he can Friday. He's definitely shown improvement.''
Suzuki told MLB.com that he had a feeling he would get hit as the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Davis was heading home.
''I knew I was going to get crushed,'' Suzuki said. ''I just kind of accepted that. I could have done a better job of getting in better position. There was some anxiety.''
