My question to all the candidates for Maui County Council: If a bill establishing a real property tax exemption for Hawaiians with kuleana lands came before you, would you vote for it?
During 2007 the Legislature passed resolutions SR 50 and HR 77 calling for a real property tax exemption for Hawaiians who own kuleana lands. The City and County of Honolulu approved Ordinance 07-7 establishing a real property tax exemption for kuleana land.
SR 50 and HR-77 states that the mayors and council members of each of the counties in Hawaii shall pass a similar bill or ordinance relative to real property tax exemptions for kuleana land owners.
