DEATH OF HOMELESS MAN STILL PROBED
LAHAINA - Police are continuing to investigate the death of a homeless man who was found unresponsive Monday morning in a cellblock at the Lahaina Police Station, after an autopsy showed inconclusive preliminary results.
Dennis Wereb, 47, was arrested at 5:46 p.m. Friday and was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, according to police records.
He had been held with two other prisoners in the cellblock, police said. Wereb was found unresponsive in the cell Monday morning when police officers were preparing to take him to the Wailuku Police Station for further investigation of his criminal case, police said.
No signs of trauma were found during the autopsy done Tuesday, said Dr. Anthony Manoukian, Maui County coroner's physician. He said no obvious cause of death was determined in preliminary findings and an examination is continuing. Wereb probably died sometime Sunday, Manoukian said.
