Long horns on Baldwin — no bull

Steering a test ride

October 9, 2008
The Maui News

Emiliano Achaval of Makawao rode up Baldwin Avenue on his Texas longhorn steer, Mufasa, 10, Wednesday afternoon: practicing for next year's Fourth of July parade.

Achaval recently received Mufasa, who will make his home at Makawao's Rocking K Arena.

He will be the mascot for the Kahuku Ranch on the Big Island.

Mufasa weighs 1,700 pounds, and his horns are 91-1/2 inches long from tip to tip.

Trainer Janice Heinze of Texas rode along to take pictures of Mufasa and Achaval.

Achaval said the animal has a very calm disposition, and he has had fun getting to know him.

"We are really enjoying him," he said.
