Haleakala Solar Inc. workers Eddie Lineberry (right) and Matthew Whitcomb install a four-panel section of photovoltaic receptors Wednesday afternoon on the roof of BJ Furniture Store in Kahului. The project on the 22,000 square foot roof includes 810 panels that are expected to generate most of the large showroom’s daytime electric needs. Haleakala Solar President Jim Whitcomb said the project is the largest photovoltaic system ever installed on Maui. He said it will generate the amount of electricity used by 60 average households. Whitcomb said the Kahului area is a good one for sunshine. “This is rated as a 480 sunshine zone,” he said. He said Kihei is Maui’s highest-rated zone at 500.
