Sand and stars at Carden night

October 29, 2008
The Maui News

PUKALANI - A scientist who has taken a close look at grains of sand and an astronomer will speak at Carden Academy of Maui's 5th-grade Science Night on Monday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Gary Greenberg spent seven years photographing grains of sand through a microscope, and his presentation will include photos of individual grains magnified hundreds of times.

"When we walk along a beach we are strolling on millions of years of geological and biological history," said Greenberg on Web site www.sandgrains.com. "Each grain of sand is unique, and each has a story to tell. It inspires the human spirit to know that the beauty and the mysteries of our universe are tangible and real, and that our lives are enriched by their presence."

The other speaker is Harriet Witt, an astronomer and science writer. She will guide students through a discussion and presentation of the night sky. Students will have the opportunity to look through a telescope and see planets and the moon's unique features.

Those interested in attending the free gathering need to sign up by Friday by calling Carden Academy at 573-6651. Space is limited.

Carden Academy is a private Upcountry school with an enrollment of 120 students in kindergarten to 8th grade.

Founded in 1998, the school uses the Carden philosophy as its foundation with a focus on the development of the whole child through a balance of academic excellence, character education, and enrichment through the arts.

The school is located at 55 Makaena Place on the grounds of Grace Church.
