Cross-cultural event to benefit Julie's Hope
LAHAINA - A cross-cultural concert and theater event featuring Hawaiian music and Scottish bagpipes will be held Saturday at Lahaina United Methodist Church as a fundraiser for Maui Police Department criminalist Julie Wood, who is battling cancer.
"A Celebration of the life of Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Cleg-horn, The Peacock Princess" will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church at 988 Front St. The church is organizing and sponsoring the event.
Admission will be by donation, with all proceeds going to help pay for medical expenses for Wood, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of appendix cancer. Friends have joined in an effort to try to raise $200,000 so Wood can travel to Sweden for advanced treatment that could be a cure.

Nihon Bunka Award nominees accepted
KAHULUI - Nominations for the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui's Nihon Bunka Award will be accepted until Dec. 15.
The award recognizes individuals for their excellence and contributions to the arts and for "their unselfish willingness to share their talents with the community," said a news release.

Sun viewing from South Pole discussed
PUKALANI - A talk on the advantages of viewing the sun from the South Pole as well as the practical difficulties will be held Friday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Stuart Jefferies and Cindy Giebink will give their free talk on "A South Pole Travelogue" at Maikalani: the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy's Advanced Technology Research Center, 34 Ohia Ku St. in the Kula Malu Town Center area of Pukalani.
The South Pole with its austral summer allows astronomers to view the sun 24 hours a day. Jefferies and Giebink give a travel log of their recent expedition to the South Pole, detailing what is involved in conducting complex scientific experiments in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
They will show their living conditions there and reflect on the changes in the South Pole that have occurred since their first expedition 20 years ago.

Parkinson's Support Group to meet Tuesday
WAILUKU - Kathleen Couch of the Maui Adult Day Care Centers will speak at the Maui Parkinson's Support Group meeting Tuesday, 10 a.m., at Hospice Maui.
Couch will discuss the role of caregivers and what resources are available.

BHS Project Grad committee to meet
WAILUKU - The Baldwin High School Project Graduation committee will meet Tuesday beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Baldwin High School Multipurpose Room.
Project Graduation is an all-night, chaperoned, drug- and alcohol-free celebration plan-ned and put on for the graduating seniors of Baldwin High School by the planning committee. The celebration, held on the night of commencement, is packed with entertainment, food, music and prizes.
The committee is compiling a cookbook, and recipes are being solicited. They may be e-mailed to bhs2009pg@gmail.
com and should include a name and phone number. Baldwin alumni are encouraged to submit recipes and are asked to note the year of graduation.

Friends of Library has holiday books
PUUNENE - Christmas and holiday craft books are available at the Maui Friends of the Library bookstore.
There are books with ideas and directions for producing gifts, embroidery, ornaments, table decorations and more. Most of the books sell for 50 cents.
The bookstore is located behind the old Puunene School and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Car paint jobs to benefit Food Bank
WAILUKU - The Maui Food Bank will receive $100 for each complete vehicle paint job at Maui Hawaiian Auto Body & Paint from Saturday to Feb. 1.
"Due to the hard economic times that we are facing, it is important that we do not forget our community, and that is why we would like to help the Maui Food Bank with a donation to those in need during these hard times," said a news release about the promotion.

Deadline extended for workshop
WAILUKU - The deadline to sign up for a Nov. 19 training session on Trauma Informed Care for Adolescents and Adults has been extended to Monday.
The session will be led by Steven Onken, who is on the faculty of the University of Hawaii School of Social Work and UH Social Science Research Institute.
The training session objectives include being able to describe a mental health recovery practice framework that involves a trauma-informed system of care, and to identify factors and utilize tools and techniques to advance recovery and trauma-informed care.
Two sessions are planned from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the Maui Memorial Medical Center auditorium.

PUKALANI - Representatives of the firms involved in planning and designing the Waiohuli development project, community center and park will speak at the Waiohuli Hawaiian Homesteaders Association community meeting Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center poolside multipurpose room.
Architect Edward Weinstein, planner Clyde Murashige of A&B Wailea, Kirk T. Tanaka of Tanaka Engineers and landscaper Paul Flinn of Paul Flinn Design will appear at the meeting.

'Christmas in November' sale set
KULA - A "Christmas in November" sale will held by the Kala Iki Thrift Store on the grounds of the Kula Hospital from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.
There are decoration, craft and other holiday items at the main store and in the adjacent Dollie's Hale. The stores are operated by the Kula Hospital Auxiliary for the benefit of the patients.
The stores are normally open on the second and last Saturdays and third Tuesday of each month. However, the stores will be closed on the last Saturday of both this month and December because of the holidays.
The auxiliary also reminds that it accepts donations during store hours, but it no longer accepts computers or related equipment, large appliances or large furniture.
8th-graders at Maui Prep set car wash
LAHAINA - Maui Preparatory Academy 8th-graders will hold a fundraiser featuring a car wash and more from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the new Lahaina Gateway shopping center.
Proceeds will help pay for a trip they are planning to Boston and New York.
The cost will be $5 for cars, and $10 for trucks and SUVs.
The school's parent, teacher and student organization will hold a baked sale. Also, there will $15 keiki haircuts by Island Style, a book fair and other merchant promotions.
