Man dies in wake of Kahului crash

KAHULUI - Police are investigating a Kahului Beach Road vehicle crash, in which one of the victims - a 59-year-old Wailuku man - died unexpectedly a few hours later.

The incident occurred around 3:12 p.m. Saturday on Kahului Beach Road, about two-tenths of a mile south of Kanaloa Avenue, police reported. Three Wailuku residents - a 19-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man - were taken in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

A few hours later, the 59-year-old, James Tavares, died unexpectedly. An autopsy was performed Monday.

The death marks Maui County's 21st traffic fatality for 2008, compared with 19 at the same time last year.

Doctor to speak on mental health care

WAILUKU - Dr. Stanton Michels, chief of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division of the state Department of Health, will address "Life After the Felix Consent Decree" during a Dec. 3 meeting in the Cameron Center auditorium.

His remarks will be given during the Mental Health America of Maui County's annual membership meeting. The event is free and open to the public. It will begin at 5 p.m. with a potluck dinner.

The decree, approved by the U.S. District Court, grew out of a lawsuit filed in 1993 on behalf of Jennifer Felix, then a Maui student. It became a class-action lawsuit that led to federal court supervision over the creation of a system to care for all learning-disabled children in Hawaii. The decree ended in May 2005.

For more event information, call 242-6461.
