WAILUKU - A 62-year-old Lahaina man involved in a motorcycle crash in Lahaina on Nov. 16 died from causes other than injuries suffered in the accident, police said Tuesday.
Donald Lubin was operating a 2006 Suzuki Burgman motorcycle, traveling east on Punakea Loop in the Mahanalua Nui subdivision when he made a U-turn, lost control of the motorcycle and fell. The paved road was blocked by a tractor and is not open for public use, police said. Lubin wasn't wearing a helmet.
The death is not counted as a traffic fatality because Lubin died of conditions that were not associated with the accident, police said.
In a second case, police said Tuesday they are investigating the death of 59-year-old James Tavares, who died a few hours after a crash on Kahului Beach Road on Saturday.
Tavares was driving a Chevrolet Silverado truck and had a 48-year-old female passenger with him. The truck was involved in a collision with an Acura sedan driven by a 19-year-old male.
Police said Tavares and the others involved, all from Wailuku, were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Although Tavares did not appear to suffer life-threatening injuries, he died several hours after the collision, police said. An autopsy on Tavares was conducted Monday, but there was no immediate information on the cause of death.
