WAILUKU - Halau Na Hanona Kulike 'O Pi'ilani received a $2,500 grant from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation through Hui Malama Learning Center to help produce a DVD documenting the halau's cultural exchange in New Zealand.
The halau met with cultural practitioners in New Zealand during a two-week trip. The 15-minute DVD will chronicle the visit.
"Relationships established in Aotearoa (New Zealand) by my father, John Keola Lake, have been rekindled with our Maori cousins during this huaka'i (journey)," said kumu hula Kapono'ai Molitau of Na Hanona Kulike 'O Pi'ilani. "Support from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation will allow us to document the importance of the relationships and the similarities of our cultures in a piece that may be shared with generations to come."
The halau and the nonprofit Hui Malama have been collaborating on cultural educational programs. For more information about Hui Malama and its programs, call 244-5911 or see Web site www.mauihui.
