WAILUKU - A 37-year-old Kihei man was being held on $5,000 bail at the Wailuku Police Station on Friday for allegedly choking his wife after he saw her talking to someone else at a bar on Thursday night, police said.

Tad J. Ramos was charged with abuse by strangulation.

Lt. John Jakubczak of the Criminal Investigation Division said that the suspect and his wife had drinks at a Kihei bar Thursday night and the suspect became jealous after he saw his wife talking to someone else.

Later, the suspect confronted his wife about what happened at the bar, allegedly grabbed her throat, squeezed it and pushed her to the ground, Jakubczak said.

He said the victim reported not being able to breathe for 10 seconds and she also felt pain to her wrist, neck and knees.

The victim refused medical treatment at the scene, Jakubczak said.

He said the suspect fled before police arrived but he later called police to turn himself in Friday morning.

A felony abuse charge can be brought against someone who impedes the normal breathing or circulation of a family or household member by applying pressure on the throat or neck.
