WAILUKU - Two men were arrested when police recovered a safe stolen in a break-in at a Wailuku business last week.

Wailuku patrol officers noticed the men standing near a white sedan that was parked in the Round Table area in Waihee at 11:40 p.m. Friday, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said one of the men immediately closed the doors and trunk of the car when the officers approached.

Officers were questioning the men when they noticed a combination dial, metal handle and plastic ring on the ground, Jakubczak said. He said police determined the combination dial belonged to a safe.

When officers asked the men if they had a safe in the car, one man said he did but it belonged to him and his girlfriend and contained savings for their child. The man also reported that he lost the key and was trying to break into the safe, Jakubczak said.

After receiving permission to search the car, police retrieved the safe from the trunk and found it contained paperwork with someone else's name and a Wailuku address, Jakubczak said.

Police had the car towed and impounded while obtaining a search warrant, and a burglary investigation was initiated, Jakubczak said. He said police checked the business on Wili Pa Loop and learned it had been broken into.

Bail was set at $2,000 each for David Kaanana, 18, and Jason Fernandez, 24. The Wailuku residents were charged with second-degree burglary.
