HUNTING

Feb. 26-A free lifesaving class put on by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources will be held Feb. 26 and 28, 2009, at the old Maui Economic Opportunity building at 179 Kaahumanu Ave. The first day will run from 5:45 to 10 p.m. and the second day will run from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The certified education class will feature safety for firearms, archery, first aid and survival; the responsibility portion of the class will cover ethics, laws, rules and regulations, game care and an examination; the conservation part of the class will feature wildlife management and specifically Hawaii's wildlife. RUNNING

Jan. 11-The Neways Maui Paradise Marathon, Half Marathon, 5k and keiki runs will be held on Jan. 11 at Kalama Park in Kihei. The expo, open to the public at no charge, will be held on Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Wailea Marriott. Jan. 18-The Maui 15k and 5k will be held on Jan. 18. The 15k course will run from Papluau Beach to Kamehameha Iki Park. The race starts at 7:20 a.m. Finishers' medals, awards and T-shirts will be given away. The 5k course will start 5 kilometers from Kamehameha Iki Park. Jan. 25-The inaugural Maui Oceanfront Marathon will be held on Jan. 25. The race starts at Wailea and finishes at Kamehameha Iki Park. There will also be a half marathon, 20-miler and 5k. To register, visit

SOCCER

Monday-A U.S. Soccer Federation referee recertification clinic is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Lihikai Elementary School cafeteria. The class is required for 2009 and is free for current USSF referees. Contact: Sky Delaney, 870-2668.

Jan. 7-The Chastain Soccer Academy is set for Jan. 7-9 at Keopuolani Park. Former U.S. women's national team member Brandi Chastain will be part of the clinic, which is open to boys and girls ages 8-18. The cost is $170 per player.
