2 Borders Express stores closing

January 8, 2009
The Maui News

WAILUKU - The Borders Express stores at the Lahaina Cannery Mall and Whalers Village in Kaanapali will be closing their doors on Jan. 24, a company spokeswoman said.

Underperforming stores are being closed as part of a strategy announced in 2007. The two stores are the only ones affected in Hawaii, said spokeswoman Mary Davis.

Around 16 employees will be affected by the closure, and Davis said the company will work to place qualified employees at its other stores if they want to remain with the company.

Borders Inc. and Walden Book Co. Inc. became wholly owned subsidiaries of Borders Group in 1994. In March 2007, Borders Group announced an initiative to "right-size" the Waldenbooks Specialty Retail segment, which includes Waldenbooks stores, Borders Express stores, Brentanos, Borders Outlet stores and Borders airport stores.
