Low temperature ties 1951 record

January 20, 2009
The Maui News

KAHULUI - Temperatures at Kahului Airport dipped down to 53 degrees Monday morning, tying a record set in 1951, according to the National Weather Service.

It was the second day in a row that the low temperature record was tied at the airport. On Sunday, the airport temperature fell to 54 degrees, which tied the low temperature mark set in 1969.

Forecasters said a cold front is expected to reach Kauai this morning, then move rapidly down the island chain, reaching east of the Big Island on Wednesday afternoon. Clouds and showers were forecast to affect each island in turn.

Light winds generated by a ridge of high pressure over the state were creating downslope winds at night, bringing cold air down from higher elevations.
