Cahill, Matthews strike gold twice at state swim meet

February 15, 2009
By STARR BEGLEY

WAIPIO, Oahu --- Libby Matthews of Seabury Hall and Jennifer Cahill of Baldwin arrived at Central Oahu Regional Park this weekend already owning state titles. They left with even more.

Matthews won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke titles Saturday in the Local Motion Swimming and Diving Championships, and Cahill claimed titles in the 200 and 500 freestyle.

''I was coming top seed in both my events and last year I won the same two events so there was some added pressure to defend my titles,'' Matthews said. ''Had a lot of pressure and excitement. I pulled it off.''

Matthews won the medley in 2 minutes, 9.46 seconds and the breaststroke in 1:07.34.

Cahill won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.81 and the 500 in 5:08.02. She also anchored the Bears' third-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:45.28), which included Jenna Shibano, Keani Kaluakini and Abby Clarke as well.

Before the meet, Cahill expressed her desire to break the 500 record (4:57.27 by Ashley Swart of Kaiser in 2002) and to leave the championship with two gold medals.

Swart's record still stands, but Cahill did accomplish her other goal.

''I couldn't ask for anything more,'' said Cahill, who also won the 500 title two years ago as a sophomore. ''My five free, it didn't go how I wanted because I wanted to break the record, but I did get a best time in my two free, and a third place overall in the state team-wise. I'm so ecstatic, my senior year going out. We got third in that relay and did everything we could to make top three.''

The Baldwin girls scored 18 points. Punahou won easily with 75, and Iolani had 21.

Matthews, a senior as well, leaves with four gold medals, tied for second in Maui Interscholastic League history, one less than Chelsea Nagata of Maui High. Kristine Hayashi won four titles at Baldwin and Saree Hoopii won four at Maui High.

Lahainaluna placed fifth with 16 points. Seabury Hall was seventh with 14 and Kamehameha Maui came in 11th with six points. Maui High had three and tied for 15th.

Lahainaluna's 200 freestyle relay team of Kaili Faust, Koral Gill, Kamaehu Alboro and Hailey Gill placed fourth in 1:43.71.

''We broke through on a couple different levels,'' said Lunas coach Tom Popdan. ''Our 200 medley relay girls broke the school record. That's the highest that we ever scored in a relay event.

''Our goal is to come in the top five and they came in fifth today. Keeping in mind the small school that we have and the small community that we come from, it's a testament to how hard our girls work.''

Alboro placed second in the 100 backstroke with a personal-best time of 59.85.

''It was a great experience and I never thought that I'd get here. It's really great (breaking the school record) because all of the girls that had the record were all great swimmers and we all looked up to them --- we were in elementary school --- and we all watched them progress and it was really great to be able to take over what they started for us.''

Kamehameha Maui's Tori Crozier was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 53:09, a personal best.

''I'm really happy about the season. I'm really looking forward to next year and seeing what happens,'' she said.

Crozier was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.13.

''Today was really exciting, the kids swam really well,'' said Warriors coach Jennifer Caravageli. ''We had Tori come back and she swam two great races. The rest of the team was really supportive and they had great swims yesterday. Overall a great season.''

Caravageli is looking forward to another season with Crozier.

''She's got one more year,'' Caravageli said. ''She's coming into swimming and is putting a lot more time and effort into it. I think big things next year will come to her.''

Maui High's Sheyenne Machida was third in diving (368.35 points). Seabury Hall's Angelina Demirbag was fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:18.70).

MIL boys champions Seabury Hall placed seventh, with 12 points. Iolani won with 62 and Punahou was second with 43. Baldwin scored one point and tied for 13th.

The Spartans' Michael Brown, Ridge Altman, Zach Johnson and James Matsui took fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.33) and seventh in the 200 medley relay (1:46.60).

''Going into the last leg there (of the freestyle relay), we were looking like a fifth, but Zach came in and got a 21.66 and got us into fourth,'' said Spartans coach Andrew Burger.

Baldwin's Austin Lopes was third in diving (412.40) and teammate Ryan Brem was fifth (295.85).
