Park improvements set to start

February 16, 2009
The Maui News

WAILUKU - Two major projects at county park facilities are slated to begin Tuesday.

First, Kahului Community Center will close through early July for the first phase of a renovation project. It features a kitchen renovation, construction of a unisex bathroom with access for the disabled, related improvements and post-construction maintenance work. The $149,051 project was awarded to contractor David P. Ting & Sons.

In Kihei, the construction of a one-mile-long pedestrian path around the perimeter of Kalama Park will start. The path, which will be 6 feet wide, will be built in increments to limit disruption of park activities, according to a county news release.

Park users are asked to heed signs and barricades as the project proceeds through different areas of the park. Construction is not expected to block access to the playground.

David P. Ting & Sons has also been hired to do the Kalama work for $516,656. Construction is expected to be completed by June 17.

For more information, contact the county's Department of Parks and Recreation, Parks Planning and Development Office, 270-7931.
