By CARLA TRACY, Dining Editor

FOR PARROT HEADS. . . The MACC's A&B Amphitheater will set the stage Tuesday for Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., so come early and dine on the Events Lawn.

"Mulligans at the Wharf will be serving up Cheese-Bangers in Paradise, Son of a Son of a Sailor taco salad and Volcano queso dip and chips," says Lisa Haole, the MACC's food and beverage co-director.

"Who Cut the Cheese will impress the crowds with signature paninis and gourmet cheese plates. Kobehana of Maui, aka the "teppanyaki wonder," will cook teri chicken, beef short ribs and miso shrimp on site. All of the plates will include mixed vegetables and steamed rice. Cold Stone Creamery and Maui Kazowie Kettlecorn round out the food vendors for this amazing parrot-head show. A beer garden will be set up for those wanting a cold brew (Landshark of course!), or a Margaritaville margarita!'"

Native Argentinians Natasha Arizu (left) and Fatima Menem flank owner Mike Capuano of the new Maui Gourmet Hot Dogs in Paia.

In addition, "the Castle Theater welcomes much-celebrated West African singer and composer Angelique Kidjo Saturday," says Haole. Consuelo's Catering will create an out-of-the-ordinary menu that sounds divine. Choose from allspice roasted chicken with polenta cakes and black beans to tangine of Moroccan veggies to spicy Madagascar crab cakes with apricot sauce. "All reasonably priced."

MEAL DEALS ABOUND. . . There's a new miniature international marketplace happening at 75 Hana Highway, Paia. "It started here about two months ago. We're all ohana already," says Mike Capuano, who opened his little thatch-roof shack, called Maui Gourmet Hot Dogs, right in the front of it. Besides selling 100-percent beef dogs, New Orleans hot links, veggie dogs and chicken gouda cheese dogs, Mike also does brisk sales of kava, traditional or flavored, such as Guava Kava.

"This is my dream job," says Mike, who also owns Wow Wee Maui Kava Bar & Grill in Kahului. "Two ladies from Buenos Aires work here and they often wear bikinis when it's hot outside. Friday nights, I grill taro burgers and beef burgers. It's fun! You may BYOB."

Shrove Tuesday as part of Mardi Gras is known as "Pancake Day." IHOP Kahului along with others nationwide will give diners free short stacks of buttermilk pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. this Tuesday. Diners are invited to make a donation to the Children's Miracle Network program at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children in support of a good cause. . . Dairy Queen in Kihei and Lahaina now allows customers to mix and match food items. Get two for $3, three for $4 and four for $5. Regular-size choices include cheeseburgers, all-beef hot dogs, French fries, chicken wraps, onion rings, side salads, medium beverages, small sundaes and soft-serve cones - complete with curls on top.

BITS AND PIECES. . .Lots of tequila sipping was going on Valentine's Day at Mala Wailea. Rock legend Sammy Hagar and NBA's head coach Don Nelson both dined there that evening. "Sammy bought the entire restaurant a round of Cabo Wabo tequila," says Mala partner Shep Gordon. "Lots of fun."

Bam! We hear Emeril Lagasse will kick it up a notch June 12 and 13 in Hawaii at the Kahala Food & Wine Classic, which keeps on gaining momentum.

Tip Ups Tavern in Kihei was recently taken over by the Dog & Duck Irish pub people. The name is still the same and it sounds like it's heaps of fun. . . Remember Horhito's? It's back in Kihei, this time at Kukui Mall.

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali has recently introduced its new Drums of the Pacific Luau. New costumes and more music, dancing and an expanded buffet add to festivities.

Lulu's Lahaina Surf Club & Grill is turning into a hot spot for pupu and cocktails in West Maui. Try the Bo Didley squidley, oysters Ala Wena, Olowalu tomato salad and ahi "prime rib" style.
