LAHAINA - A Lahaina-bound driver, who apparently didn't realize a police sergeant was nearby, was arrested Monday after he was seen leaning out of a truck to knock down cones along a Honoapiilani Highway restriping project, police said.
Jimmie Sims, 18, of Kihei, was driving a 1988 Nissan pickup truck into Lahaina just south of Puamana Park at 2:45 p.m. when he caught the attention of Lahaina police Sgt. Ricky Uedoi, who was heading in the opposite direction.
"The driver was leaning out of the vehicle and knocking down cones," said Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District.
He said Sims had tipped over at least three cones before he was stopped by Uedoi, who was in an unmarked police vehicle.
Sims was arrested after police learned he didn't have a driver's license, Hirata said.
Sims was released after posting $200 bail for the charge of driving without a license. He also was cited for interfering with a traffic control device by knocking down the cones and for a seat belt violation.
"People without a license shouldn't be attracting attention to themselves," Hirata said.
