Lahaina’s Mateus Ward, 10, used “Burning Love” to win over the crowd, taking first place in the Maui Pops Orchestra’s Elvis Presley talent search during the orchestra’s Spring Fest concert March 8 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Ward, shown backstage with orchestra conductor Jim Durham, was chosen by audience applause. Allen Idemoto of Kahului took second prize with his rendition of “Jailhouse Rock.” Female contender Jan McDonald of Kihei took third place with “Johnny B. Goode.” First place was an Oahu round trip for two, including Superferry transportation, two nights in an Aqua Resort and $100 in Maui Mall gift certificates.
