Imua early-childhood program gets $10,000

The Maui News

WAILUKU - Imua Family Services is the beneficiary of a $10,000 grant from the Atherton Family Foundation to be used for its Early Childhood Development Program (ECDP).

The program is a three-year demonstration project that provides therapeutic services for children ages 3 to 6 with developmental delays who do not qualify for state Department of Education special education services. The program is in its second year.

ECDP offers a broad spectrum of services for these "gap group" children to help them meet age-appropriate development. The latter includes speech, language, physical and occupational therapy, and special instruction. Another aim is to offer education and support to families, preschool teachers and caregivers of special needs children.

This is the third grant for the ECDP program from the Atherton foundation. The grant was administered through The Hawai'i Community Foundation, one of the largest endowed grant-making private resources in the state.

Imua Family Services provides early-childhood-development services to children and their families. Each year, Imua serves more than 2,500 people on Maui and Lanai.

For more information about Imua or to make a donation, contact Katie Hazen, fund development associate, at 244-7467, ext. 260, or see Web site www.imuafamilyservices.org.
