KIHEI - South Maui Sustainability will hold its first Edible Garden Tour on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will tours of three "edible backyards." A donation of $5 or more is requested; it will support South Maui Sustainability's activities.

At each site, the owners will show their gardens and answer questions. The sites include:

* A home that is converting from an ornamental yard to a sustainable permaculture food garden.

* A "masterpiece of permaculture design" that began more than 25 years ago and includes 44 edible species.

* A "biodynamic intensive garden" with Zen beauty, rich fragrance and diversity, including Hawaiian plants.

The tour will begin at the first home, which is in Maui Meadows, and from there participants will carpool to the other sites.

For directions and other details, send e-mail to info@SouthMauiSustainability.org.

Also, those who want to carpool to the first home may send e-mail to rides@CarpoolMaui.com, which will see if there are others who want to do the same.
