WAILUKU - An off-duty Maui police officer suffered multiple injuries when he was beaten Saturday night near the Waihee Ball Park, police said.
Police arrested two men and three juveniles - two boys and a girl - in connection with the assault and were continuing to interview the suspects at the Maui Police Department Sunday evening.
The investigation stems from a fight reported around 11 p.m. Saturday on Kahekili Highway near the Waihee Ball Park.
The off-duty police officer, who is assigned to the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division, confronted a boy and girl when he found them using baseball bats to smash mailboxes, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the Maui Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.
During the confrontation, a fight broke out, resulting in the off-duty police officer suffering a contusion, abrasions and lacerations, Jakubczak said. The officer was treated and released at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The two men - a 42-year-old from Waihee and a 38-year-old from Wailuku - had not been charged as of Sunday evening.
Jakubczak said police believe two baseball bats and a large rock were used in the assault. He said he didn't know if the assailants knew their victim was a police officer.
