Man faces extradition to Wisconsin for fraud, theft charges

WAILUKU - After reportedly using his former fiancee's credit card to fly to Maui to meet another woman, a 40-year-old man was expected to be taken back to Wisconsin today to face charges.

The way for Raymond E. Jackson's extradition was cleared when he was sentenced Thursday for second-degree theft of services from the Maui Prince Hotel in Makena, where he was staying when authorities caught up with him Jan. 9.

Following a plea agreement, 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza placed Jackson on five years' probation and gave him credit for 90 days he has spent in jail. Jackson was ordered to pay $800 in restitution.

Because he also is being held on a no-bail warrant, Jackson won't be released until Wisconsin authorities take him into custody. Deputy Prosecutor Terence Herndon said that was expected to occur today.

Jackson, a Minnesota resident, was being sought for theft and fraudulent use of a credit card in Wisconsin, according to court records.

He left on Dec. 23, using his former fiancee's credit card number to buy airline tickets to Maui. He reportedly had told the Wisconsin woman, whom he was supposed to marry in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve, that he was traveling to North Dakota for a business meeting.

He had the woman's cellular telephone, which was monitored along with her credit card activity to trace some of Jackson's movements, court records show. He allegedly tried to use the stolen credit card Dec. 26 at a Maui florist to buy $160 in roses. He also reportedly had stayed at a Kahana hotel and attended a time-share presentation on Maui.

An investigator with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department in Ellsworth, Wis., was in contact with Maui police, who arrested Jackson after he called the woman from the Maui Prince Hotel two days after checking in. He told police he couldn't pay for the room and other charges.

In the room, police found the woman's luggage, compact disc player and toothbrush.

According to court documents, Jackson told police he had given the Wisconsin woman's diamond ring and pearl necklace to his new girlfriend, whom he made contact with online and met on Maui. He reportedly had been planning to leave Maui to join her in Russia.

Court records show Jackson has past arrests for theft, credit card fraud and abuse in California, Minnesota, Tennessee, Mississippi and Wisconsin.

When he spoke to a Maui probation officer who prepared a report for his sentencing, Jackson was "somewhat deceptive," Herndon said.

"It's consistent with his past conduct and his past criminal history," he said.
