The aroma of freshly baked delights wafted through the Lahaina air last week, enticing customers as Hula Cookies opened its doors at the historic Pioneer Inn at 655 Front Street.
Gary DeZao and his father-in-law, Richard Murray, are partners in the business, which features eight yummy varieties of cookies from coconut chocolate to honey-papaya oatmeal. Its signature is the Hula's Delight with mango and pineapple morsels, coconut and macadamia nuts.
Many Mauians already shop at the original Hula Cookies, which opened in Maalaea in 1999. Now, there's a convenient West Maui location.

"We're open from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily," says Gary. "We also sell 22 flavors of Maui's own Roselani Ice Cream along with sherbet and 10 Sno Ka 'Oi shave ice syrups. They have really stepped up to the plate to partner with us."
"The Maalaea location is a success model for the Lahaina store," says Roselani's Cathy Nobriga Kim. "We're honored Hula Cookies continues to support us. We hope that West Maui residents and visitors will really enjoy the new store."
Want to eat warm cookies after dinner? You may buy Hula dough to go, which is made at the Maui Culinary Academy. "Just add egg and butter and you're off on your own," says Gary.
Hula Cookies also sells its own brand of Kona and Kauai coffees roasted here and Maui artist Jill Ireland designed the island-inspired cover of the gift tins, which are perfect for shipping.
