May Day is Lei Day

May 2, 2009
By MATTHEW THAYER, Staff Writer

Maui High School senior Alicia Mataele performs the Tongan dance "Teu Lele Mai" as Selaima Pullen jumps in to join her Friday morning during May Day festivities at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.

Mataele's mother and Pullen are both hotel employees. Marriott staff welcomed the community and guests by providing entertainment, an impressive lei-making contest, local-style food and crafts.

A colorful entry in the May Day lei contest manifests the 1927 song "May Day Is Lei Day in Hawai'i."
