Maui Police Department recruits honor the memory of officer John Lilio as his funeral procession passes Hale Maka'i police headquarters on Mahalani Street in Wailuku on Friday. The four-year veteran of the department was only 36 when he died April 8 after an 18-month fight with cancer.
Lilio was buried in Maui Memorial Park's Garden of Meditation. Lilio was born in Kailua, Oahu, but moved to Maui in 1998.
He worked in the liquor industry until he decided to become a police officer. He graduated from the department's recruit school in 2006 and worked in Kihei Patrol District his entire career. He is survived by his wife and two children, who remembered him in his obituary as a humble man with a strong heart and mind.
