MCC receives donation of $1.5 million
Funds to be used for Web-enhanced learning at collegeKAHULUI - Maui Community College has received a $1.5 million gift, its largest donation ever, from a Maui resident for Web-enhanced learning, according to an announcement from the college and the University of Hawai'i Foundation.
The donor asked to remain anonymous.
The money will go toward creating Web-enhanced classrooms and new learning experiences, the announcement said. The donor's aim is to help the college transform and elevate its student access to computing, the Internet and Web-based content.
Nationally known for its laptop distribution initiative, Seton Hall University has been selected to help the college draft a plan to increase students' use of the Internet.
The plan calls for eventually giving every student access to the Web and computer resources. The college also intends to create a ubiquitous computer network that can be accessed by students at all times. Starting this summer, teachers will redesign their curricula to match the plan.
"This extraordinary and generous investment will accelerate our academic transformation to permit more students access to greater success," MCC Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto said. "With our faculty's leadership, this gift will ensure that the Web and computing tools available at many colleges and universities elsewhere will now be available in Maui County."
