Owens advances to state quarterfinals

Four-time MIL champ seeks third straight trip to semifinals

WAIPIO, Oahu - Four-time Maui Interscholastic League girls singles champion Jackie Owens of Lahainaluna High School is the only MIL player left standing

at the Carlsmith Ball State Tennis Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Owens, a two-time state final four player, advanced to today's quarterfinals - the semifinals are also today.

On Thursday, Owens, who is seeded second, defeated Jan Matsumoto of Maryknoll 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. Owens, who will attend Washington State University in the fall, was the runner-up in the championship last season and had a third-place finish in 2007.

In other round-of-16 play, Austin Wines and Jesse Knight of Maui High lost 6-4, 6-3 to Robert Tamai and Colin Tseng of Iolani.

In girls singles, Kerrie-Ann Tobita of Baldwin was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by top-seeded Kristin Lim of Punahou, and Allison Embernate of Seabury Hall lost to Sherise Lum of Punahou 6-0, 6-1.

In girls doubles, Kendra Kaaa and Abby Okazaki of Kamehameha Maui fell to Kelly Domingo and Kelsey Daguio of Sacred Hearts 6-0, 6-0, and Ashley and Rachel Pascual of Baldwin lost to Nikki Castel and Bobbi Oshiro of Iolani 6-1, 6-0.

All MIL representatives in the boys singles draw were eliminated in the second round.

All championship matches are set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday at CORP.
