Carden organizes Baldwin Beach cleanup

PUKALANI - Carden Academy of Maui has organized a beach cleanup at Baldwin Beach Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday and invites the public to join in.

The event also will be a fundraiser for the private Upcountry school with students from kindergarten to 8th grade. Lunches from Hana Bay Picnic Co. will be sold for $7.95, with all of the proceeds going to the school. The lunch includes a sandwich, chips and a chocolate chip cookie. Contact Carden Academy at 573-6651 to order lunch.

Carden students also will sell reusable shopping bags at the event for $7 for one bag, $12 for two bags and $20 for four bags. The goal is to rid the community of plastic shopping bags that can be harmful to the environment.

Reusable water bottles also will be sold for $3 each.

Jerusalem Market at Beit Shalom on Sunday

KIHEI - A Jerusalem Market will be held Sunday at Beit Shalom Synagogue from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There will be fresh, hot, sweet braided challah bread and falafel sandwiches for sale as well as baked goods, homemade crafts and gently used items.

Residents also will be able to have their cars cleaned in the Sea of Galilee car wash in the parking lot from noon to 4 p.m. Cars will cost $7 and larger vehicles $10.

Crafters still are being sought, and rummage items still may be donated to the sale. Call the office of the synagogue at 874-5397 to ask questions, make a donation or sign up as a crafter. Beit Shalom Synagogue is located at 634 Alulike St. in North Kihei.

Seabury grad receives college scholarship

TACOMA, Wash. - A Makawao resident has been awarded Phi Delta Theta's Jack Neal Scholarship for a second time at the University of Puget Sound.

Andrew Kloppel received the $100 scholarship from the Phi Delta Theta chapter, awarded to members who maintain at least a 3.0 grade-point average. Kloppel, a double major in Spanish and math, pitched for the school's baseball team.

He is a 2007 graduate of Seabury Hall, and the son of Ken and Alice Kloppel of Makawao.

Molokai charity walk raises $3,800

KAUNAKAKAI - More than 70 Molokai residents raised $3,800 for island nonprofit organizations at the Molokai Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Saturday.

The event was sponsored by the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association, and occurred a week earlier than the visitor industry charity walks on Maui, Oahu, the Big Island and Kauai. The Maui Walk will begin Saturday at 7 a.m. at the War Memorial Soccer Field.

The Molokai Charity Walk began at One Alii Park and ended at Hotel Molokai, where participants were treated to a festive program emceed by "Princess" Zhan Dudoit, bento box lunches and door prizes.

The business raising the most funds - $1,450 - was the Molokai Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Summer singing class to begin

PUKALANI - A 10-week summer fun singing class gets under way on May 20 at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center.

The class taught by vocal coach and vocalist Lani Star is sponsored by the county Parks and Recreation Department. Students will learn vocal methods used by professionals.

The classes will run from May 20 to July 22 beginning at 6 p.m.

All ages are welcomed. The class is $50 for the 10 weeks.

St. Anthony to recognize students

WAILUKU - St. Anthony Junior Senior High School will celebrate its 160th anniversary as it gathers its community and invites the general public to the school's annual awards ceremony.

The event begins at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the St. Anthony Church Center in Wailuku. Students in grades 7 through 12 will be recognized for both their academic and athletic achievements.

Health official to speak on swine flu

KAHULUI - An official with the state Department of Health will discuss swine flu at the Kiwanis Club of Maui meeting Thursday, beginning at noon, at Cary & Eddie's Hideaway.

Mary Santa Maria will appear at the meeting. The public is invited, and no reservations are needed. Lunch is $11.

Expert on fraud to speak at AARP

KULA - An AARP expert on fraud will speak at the Kula AARP chapter meeting Monday at the Kula Community Center.

Malcolm Findley will discuss recent scams and what people need to watch out for. The meeting will begin with refreshments at 9 a.m. followed by the program at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend; no reservations are necessary.

Sophomore Award goes to Mauian

ASHLAND, Ohio - Andrew Pacheco of Kahului has received the Sophomore Award for the Department of Criminal Justice/Sociology at Ashland University.

Departmental awards are given to one sophomore, junior and senior from each department, and were awarded at the Academic Honors Convocation on April 19.

He is the son of Kenneth Pacheco and Linda Wagner, and is majoring in sociology.

Kihei Lutheran to hold car wash

KIHEI - Kihei Lutheran Church will hold a car wash Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, to raise money for the American Cancer Society's South Maui Relay For Life.

Washes will be done by donation.

The South Maui Relay For Life is set for July 11 and 12 at Kenolio Park.

Haleakala park official at Rotary

PUKALANI - The superintendent of Haleakala National Park will speak at the Rotary Club of Upcountry meeting Friday morning in Kamehameha Schools Maui's high school dining hall.

Sarah Creachbaum has been invited to the meeting, which begins at 7:30 a.m.

The public is invited; breakfast is available for $10.

Sacred Hearts to hold rummage sale

LAHAINA - Sacred Hearts School will hold a rummage sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the school cafeteria. The money raised will help send students to Washington, D.C.

Kalama Heights to hold open house

KIHEI - An open house at Kalama Heights Retirement Community will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
