WAILUKU - Hui Malama Learning Center in Wailuku has received a $10,000 grant from the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation to develop a middle school and high school curriculum in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that's project-based and emphasizes sustainability.
The grant funds Hui Malama's project "Preparing for Tomorrow: Sustainability Across a Middle & High School Curriculum." The project will expand STEM curriculum at Hui Malama and incorporate new initiatives, such as a school garden, a whole-foods-nutrition program, read aloud/ reading-for-content program and vocational tracks for students seeking to receive their high school diplomas through the General Educational Development (GED) test.
A sustainability model will be the consistent theme woven through each program, using hands-on and project-based learning methods that will help prepare students with the skills that are compatible with Maui's cultural choices and economic aspirations. These tools will give value to the community's social, economic and environmental components.
