HONOLULU - Eleven schools in Maui County are vying for prize money in the Neighbor Islands Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages annual recycling competition.
From now until May 30, members of the public may take their outdated phone books and directories to the schools. They also may be dropped off at Maui Disposal on Maui, and Makoa Trucking on Molokai.
The participating schools are Lanai High & Elementary School, Kuapaluu Elementary New Century Public Charter School, Molokai Intermediate School, Haleakala Waldorf School, Hana High & Elementary, King Kekaulike High, Horizons Academy of Maui, Montessori Hale O Keiki, Montessori of Maui and St. Anthony Junior Senior High.
On Maui, the school that collects the most directories per student enrolled will be awarded $700, with $500 awarded for second, $300 for third, $200 for fourth and $100 for fifth. The top school on Molokai will earn $400, with $200 for second. Lanai High & Elementary will be awarded $250 for participating in the program.
The recycled directories will be shipped to Island Shell in Honolulu, where they will be processed. The directories will be converted into oil-absorbent materials and used to manufacture home insulation and mulch for local companies, such as Green Lava Hydro-Mulch and InCide Pest Control Cellulose Insulation.
A similar competition on Oahu collected more than 90 tons of old directories, which were recycled. The recycling effort comes as the new Hawaiian Telephone Yellow Pages are set to be released this month.
