Madeline Smith of Haiku (second from left) joins hands in prayer with her daughter, Veronica Smith (left), and her granddaughter, Desiree Smith, 14, before Memorial Day services Monday morning in the Makawao Veterans Cemetery. The family gathered to honor Madeline's husband, World War II veteran Roy Smith, who died in 1999. Madeline Smith said she remembers her husband as a devoted family man who loved the country he served. "He was a good veteran. He thought a lot of his country," she said.
