MAN SENTENCED IN THEFT OF BACKPACK
WAILUKU - A 26-year-old man was sentenced to one year's probation and ordered to pay nearly $600 in restitution for stealing a backpack from a beach on Maui last year.
Second Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza followed a plea agreement in sentencing Sean McGinty on Monday. McGinty also was given credit for two days he served in jail.
McGinty originally faced a felony charge of second-degree theft, but that was reduced to a misdemeanor charge of third-degree theft in a plea agreement.
Cardoza allowed McGinty to have a chance to clear his record if he successfully completes probation.
McGinty was ordered to pay $586 in restitution for the theft of the backpack, sunglasses, baseball cap and camera on Oct. 14, 2008, according to court records.
"My actions were grossly out of character. This is not what I am or what I want to be," McGinty said as he apologized in court. "It will not happen again."
