As one of the premier figurative artists in the state, Kirk Kurokawa's much-anticipated annual exhibit is one of the highlights of the Viewpoints Gallery season. His latest collection is on display beginning today to July 2, with an opening reception at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Winner of the Jurors' Award at the Schaefer Portrait Challenge in 2006, Kurokawa has been capturing the nuances of the human spirit and the character of everyday people in oils for many years. This collection is of particular interest as color is the dominating force in his work.
"Looking at the paintings I created for this show, I realize I have pushed my use of color to a new level," says Kurokawa. " Color is a fundamental element in every painting, but I aim to push the limits and use it to evoke moods, enhance the environment and to create thought. I urge viewers to not only see the subject, but to see color - and beyond."
