FIRE FINALLY OUT A WEEK AFTER STARTING
KIHEI - A fire that started a week ago in Kihei was finally declared extinguished Saturday afternoon.
The fire started May 31 on vacant land mauka of Ohukai Road and went on to burn an estimated 400 acres. It was determined to be under control Wednesday, but firefighters continued to monitor the area and extinguish hot spots through the end of the week.
Flames come within 200 yards of the nearest structure, but no homes were evacuated. Forty-five firefighters participated in the effort.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

NATIVE HAWAIIAN CHAMBER TO MEET
KAHULUI - The Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting and elect its board of directors Tuesday.
The group will meet at 5:30 p.m. for networking at Cary and Eddie's Hideaway in Kahului, with meeting and dinner to start at 6 p.m.
Cost is $20 per person, with a no-host bar.
Second Circuit Judge Richard Bissen will speak on how Hawaiian culture can enhance Hawaiian business.
Nominees for the organization's board include Boyd Mossman, Keoni Woo, Della Nakamoto, Jimmy Haynes, Kai Pelayo and Ginger Soares.

HALEAKALA WALDORF LEADER RETURNING
KULA - Jocelyn Romero Demirbag is returning as chair of school for Haleakala Waldorf School in Kula.
Demirbag, who has 22 years in teaching and school administration, had served as the school's administrator and then chair of school from 1997 to 2006. She then served the next two years as the philanthropic services officer for the Hawai'i Community Foundation.
She returned to Haleakala Waldorf as interim chair for the 2008-2009 school year. Now, she has been appointed as the ongoing chair of the school.
Haleakala Waldorf School is an accredited independent school with 230 students from preschool to 8th grade.

COMMENT SOUGHT ON FUNDING APPLICATION
WAILUKU - The county prosecutor's office is soliciting public input on an application for federal funding.
The application seeks funding from the U.S. Department of Justice for a community violence program manager position. The position would be responsible for identifying and addressing criminal activity through prevention activities in Maui County.
