Rebels in Ukraine seize another border guard base

LUHANSK, Ukraine (AP) — Rebels have seized another border guard base in eastern Ukraine, the third such military facility taken over the last day.

Insurgents on Wednesday descended on the base in the town of Sverdlovsk on the Russian border, and forced out the guards.

A rebel fighter who gave only his first name, Andrei, said they want to create a "humanitarian corridor" that would allow civilians to flee to Russia to escape the fighting.

Overnight, another border guard base in the eastern Luhansk region fell into the hands of pro-Russia rebels. The insurgents also seized a National Guard base after troops there ran out of ammunition.

The setbacks highlighted the ineffectiveness of Ukraine's poorly trained and cash-starved armed forces, which have struggled to uproot the mutiny that has engulfed the nation's industrial heartland.
