KULA - Maui firefighters were containing a grass fire Friday evening that burned up to 15 acres near King Kekaulike High School.
Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said that the fire was reported at 2:10 p.m. and apparently started in a field next to the public school along Kula Highway.
The firefighters were hampered by gusty winds. The National Weather Service on Friday reported wind speeds as high as 30 mph at the summit of Haleakala.
The fire managed to get within 200 feet of a home, but firefighters doused the flames with the use of four fire engines, two water tankers and two helicopters, which made water drops in windy conditions.
By 5:30 p.m., the fire had not been extinguished but was no longer advancing, Martin said. No injuries or damage to structures were reported.
The Maui Police Department closed Kula Highway between Aapueo Parkway and Haleakala Highway to accommodate the Fire Department.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire, Martin said.
