State can use your help

POSTED: June 24, 2009

The governor's advisory council, a state commission and a judicial disciplinary board need volunteers willing to sacrifice some of their time for the good of everyone.

One of the most important vacancies is on the state Commission on Water Resource Management, which is in the process of establishing stream flow standards. The commission supervises water resources on all the islands, including the West Maui Mountains' aquifers and streams.

State law requires each member to have "substantial experience in the area of water resource management." A nominating committee will select at least three candidates for nomination by the governor. Tuesday is the deadline for sending nominations and resumes to Nominating Committee, Commission on Water Resource Management, P.O. Box 621, Honolulu 96809.

The Hawaii Supreme Court is looking for one attorney and one person who is not an attorney to serve on the court's Disciplinary Board. Duties include investigating the conduct and competence of attorneys. The board, working with the state Office of Disciplinary Counsel, recommends appropriate action, which can include disbarment.

Qualifications include experience in areas that aid in the evaluation and analysis of complaints. Deadline for application is July 15. Send cover letter and resume to Gayle J. Lau, Nominating Committee, Supreme Court of Hawaii, P.O. Box 26436, Honolulu 96825-6436.

Gov. Linda Lingle is renewing her Council of Neighbor Island Advisors made up of advisory councils on each of the islands. The councils hold public meetings, listen to local concerns about what the state is or is not doing and are the governor's eyes and ears.

Current members of the councils are being urged to re-up. Interested Maui County residents should submit a letter and resume to Governor's Liaison George Kaya by Tuesday. For information call Kaya at 243-5798 or e-mail him at mauigov@hawaii.gov.

State and county volunteers are an important part of government. There's no pay, but there is the potential for a lot of satisfaction.
