Early childhood program gets grant
WAILUKU - The McInerny Foundation has awarded Imua Family Services $30,000 for its Early Childhood Development Program.
The Imua program provides speech language, occupational and physical therapy to children 3 to 6 years old who have a developmental delay that is not severe enough to qualify for state Department of Education services.
Among the state's largest charitable institutions, the McInerny Foundation was formed to promote the welfare of the people of Hawaii.

Advance health care directive explained
WAILUKU - A free workshop on advance health care directives will be held July 6 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente Maui Lani Clinic.
Greg Lagoy, director of Hospice Maui, will discuss preparations that should be made in case an individual becomes incapacitated or unable to express his or her wishes. He will answer questions to help participants understand the purpose of an advance health care directive, which may include end-of-life decisions, assignment of the power of attorney and health care proxies.

Helping elders stay in homes to be topic
KIHEI - The marketing and intake specialist for Maui PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) will make a presentation to the members of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise on Wednesday morning.
Cheryl Adolpho will speak at the breakfast meeting at 7:30 at the Five Palms Restaurant at the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei.
She will discuss her program, which supports the desire for the elderly to remain in their homes for as long as possible, and will take questions from the audience.
After earning her degree in social work, Adolpho returned to Maui and found herself a caregiver for her father. She has worked for a variety of social service agencies, including Hale Makua Health Services since 2003.
The public is invited to the gathering. The cost of the breakfast is $17.

Event raises $500 for youth center
KIHEI - The Summer Dreamin' party put on by The Maui Thing and South Shore Tiki Lounge earlier this month raised $500 for the Kihei Youth Center.
The lounge gave a portion of the proceeds from that evening, and other donations came from the guests. Maui Thing, Bohemia Boutique and Summer House donated prizes for the event.
The Kihei Youth Center will use the money for art supplies, athletic equipment and educational materials for its program for youths 8 to 17 years old.

Class offered in low-impact aerobics
WAILUKU - A four-part low-impact aerobics class will be held next month at Kaiser Permanente Wailuku Clinic.
"Fit & Fun With Paula (Keele)" will be held Wednesdays, July 8, 15, 22 and 29, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The class is for people who have trouble standing for periods of time or have not exercised for a while. The series will focus on endurance, balance and coordination while sitting or standing.
The fee for the series of classes is $16. The deadline to register and pay is Wednesday. Call Kaunoa Senior Services at 280-7308 to register.
Those attending should wear walking-type shoes.

Keiki Cupboard effort described
KAHULUI - The founders of Keiki Cupboard will appear at a Tuesday meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Kahului to discuss the nonprofit's goal to provide school supplies to Maui students.
Bonny Ponting and Toby Neal, president and vice president, respectively, of the nonprofit will speak during a noon luncheon meeting at Cary & Eddie's Hideaway in Kahului. Lunch costs $11 per person.
The nonprofit's goal is to make supplies available in every Maui school.

Makawao Hongwanji fundraiser coming
MAKAWAO - Makawao Hongwanji Mission will hold its annual bazaar and garage sale Saturday and July 5 at the temple, 1074 Makawao Ave.
The garage sale will offer 3,000 square feet of clothing, furniture, appliances, cookware and collectibles Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The garage sale will continue the next day with the bazaar from 7 a.m. to noon.
The bazaar will have chow fun, pickled peaches, baked goods, preserves, plants and fresh produce for sale.
