Road closures ordered

POSTED: July 3, 2009

LAHAINA - Road closures have been announced for Fourth of July events this weekend.

Police will close a portion of Front Street in Lahaina for a Fourth of July fireworks show organized by the Maui Chamber of Commerce.

The road will be closed between Baker and Hotel streets starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Side streets also will be closed, and no on-street parking will be allowed.

Those attending are not allowed to set off fireworks, including sparklers. Also banned are alcohol, chairs, bicycles and dogs except for service animals.

Officers will patrol the area and enforce any violations.

Front Street will reopen to traffic at 9 p.m., following the fireworks show, which will begin at 8 p.m.

Earlier in the day, various roads will be closed beginning at 8:45 a.m. for the 44th annual Paniolo Parade in Makawao. The parade starts at 9 a.m., with parking and shuttle service available at the Oskie Rice Arena. Parking also will be available at the Eddie Tam Memorial Center, with shuttle service after the parade. Parking will not be allowed along the parade route.

Parade road closures include: Baldwin Avenue at its intersection with Kaluanui Road; Makawao Avenue at its intersections with Kokomo and Makani roads; and Olinda Road at its intersection with Hanamu Road.

The roads are expected to reopen at 11 a.m. or as soon as possible after the parade.
