Officials probe 3 fires in Lahaina
Info on blazes near roadways sought by MPDOLOWALU - Police are investigating three roadside brush fires that occurred within a 35-minute span Thursday morning along Honoapiilani Highway.
The first fire at 10:38 a.m. burned 2,500 square feet of brush on the makai side of the highway near Mile Marker 15.5 on the Lahaina side of Olowalu Store, said Lt. Tim Gapero of the Criminal Investigation Division.
Lahaina patrol officers quickly extinguished a second fire on the mauka side of the highway just past the Olowalu dump near an area known as Cut Mountain, Gapero said. He said officers were at the scene as the fire was just starting and smothered the flames with dirt. About 100 square feet of brush burned.
The third fire, reported at 11:13 a.m., burned about 2 acres mauka of the highway near Puamana at Hokiokio Road before being extinguished, Gapero said. "Luckily, there was no wind," he said.
Police and fire investigators went to the fire scenes, which were all near the road, Gapero said.
Anyone with information on the fires is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 244-6425 or Maui Crime Stoppers at 242-6966. Callers to Crime Stoppers remain anonymous and are given a code number.
Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of people responsible for felony crimes.
