Fire safety training at hospital

July 15, 2009
The Maui News
Maui Memorial Medical Center employee Jan Inouye-Ogata uses a fire extinguisher under the watchful eye of Sgt. George T. Arcangel, a Maui Memorial Medical Center security officer. Inouye-Ogata experienced firsthand what it is like to battle flames during a recent fire safety training program at the hospital. Arcangel and My T. Do, a registered nurse in the hospital’s Quality Department, partnered with the county Fire Prevention Bureau in training 1,271 hospital workers. Besides extinguisher use, the training covered fire sprinklers, oxygen shut-off methods and emergency procedures for evacuation of patients. The bureau even brought the Fire Safety House trailer to the hospital and conducted a live-burn exercise to give staff members a chance to see how fire sprinklers work.
