Helioseismology topic of astronomy gathering
PUKALANI - The study of the sun's interior will be the focus of a lecture Friday at the Maikalani University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy Advanced Technology Research Center beginning at 6:30 p.m.
"Helioseismology: Song of the Sun" will be the topic of the talk by James D. Armstrong, Maui technology education and outreach specialist for the Institute for Astronomy.
Helioseismology is the study of sound waves inside the sun. Armstrong will explain how scientists measure these sound waves and interpret them to better understand this solar system's star.

Origins of the universe discussed at Hosmer
HALAEAKALA NATIONAL PARK - The expansive subject of the origins of the universe is the focus when Haleakala National Park holds program No. 2 of its summertime series on kilo hoku (star watching) Saturday.
The series offers star lore and amateur astronomy.
The free hourlong program begins at 7:30 p.m., just after sunset by the Hosmer Grove shelter. Participants should bring a beach mat or tarp to lie on and should dress for cold-evening temperatures.
There is a park entrance fee of $10.

Kahului Hongwanji o-bon this weekend
KAHULUI - Kahului Hongwanji Mission will hold its o-bon festival Friday and Saturday.
Services will begin at 7 each night. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Mariko Nishiyama of Lahaina Hongwanji Mission.
Bon dancing will follow from 8 to 10 p.m.
There will be chow fun and other food concessions.

Bon-dance practices at Rinzai Zen offered
PAIA - Bon-dance practices will be held at the Rinzai Zen Mission of Paia on Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 23 to Aug. 18.
The practices to learn Okinawan bon dance will begin at 7 p.m. Attendees may call the church to have someone open the gate to Baldwin Park if it is closed.
The temple's o-bon will be held Aug. 22. Services will begin at 6 p.m. with a special blessing of the shisa (lion) at 7 p.m. The bon dance will follow.

Autumn Food and Craft Fair vendors sought
WAILUKU - Vendors can make reservations for the annual Autumn Food and Craft Fair sponsored by the Wailuku Hongwanji Buddhist Women's Association.

BHS Class of 1999 extends deadline
WAILUKU - The Baldwin High School Class of 1999 has extended its reunion signup deadline to July 25.
"Hollywood - It's a Red Carpet Event!" will be held Aug. 29 at the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Waikapu.
Also being planned for the weekend are a couples night, ohana day and school tour.
The deadline for class members to RSVP and pay is July 25.

Hui Malama given $5,000 grant
WAILUKU - Hui Malama Learning Center has received a $5,000 grant from the Atherton Family Foundation for development of a technology/sustainability curriculum.
The grant will support the "Preparing for Tomorrow: Sustainability Across a Middle & High School Curriculum." It will expand on the science, technology, engineering and math curriculum and also incorporate initiatives such as Whole Foods nutrition, which includes a student-run garden, and Read Aloud, which is about reading for content.

Grant for Camp Imua received
WAILUKU - Imua Family Services received $2,000 from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation for its Camp Imua, a weeklong camp for children with special needs.
This year's camp was held for 50 youths from June 7 to 12 at Camp Maluhia. More than 140 volunteers assisted at the camp, which offered activities such as ocean kayaking, Piiholo Zipline rides and helicopter trips.
Parents and caregivers of campers also received a respite. The camp was free to participants.

Rummage, plant, bake sale Saturday
KAHULUI - The 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu Rummage/Plant/ Bake Sale will be held from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday in Kahului at 46 E. Papa Ave.
Shoppers will find housewares, furnishings, clothing, toys, jewelry and books plus local-style pickled items, such as takuan (daikon).
The 85-member Wailuku chapter of 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu was started in 1923. The statewide group is the oldest royal Hawaiian society for women with more than 500 members in nine chapters.
Organizers said sale proceeds of the third annual sale will benefit society activities to perpetuate Hawaii's past and promote Hawaii's culture and language.

Free massages for seniors offered
KAHULUI - Free massages for senior citizens will be offered by the Maui School of Therapeutic Massage on Saturday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at Hale Mahaolu Elua Senior Center.
Those 65 years and older are eligible for the massages, which can reduce stress and relieve aches and pains in the muscles and joints.

Makawao School uniform pickup set
MAKAWAO - Families who ordered school uniforms at Makawao School may pick them up Tuesday in the school office.
There will be a limited supply of uniforms available for purchase. They cost $7 for youth sizes and $8 for adult sizes.
Parents also may make other school-related payments before the first day of school July 31 (kindergartners will start later).
Planners for students in grades 2 to 5 may be purchased for $5.
The school also will collect fees for bus transportation (cost varies based on routes and one- or two-way requests), the A-Plus after-school program ($55 a month) and lunch-account deposits.
Makawao School will accept only exact cash for payments.
New or transfer students need to register before the first day of school. The child's release forms, health record, original birth certificate and proof of residency need to be brought in when registering

Work of sheriffs topic of speaker
KAHULUI - Lt. Patrick Sniffen will discuss the work of the state Sheriff Division when he is the guest speaker of the Kiwanis Club of Maui on Thursday.
The club meets at noon at Cary & Eddie's Hideaway in Kahului. The meeting is free and open to the public, and an optional meal costs $11.
The Sheriff Division is part of the state Department of Public Safety. Its mission includes protecting people and property under the control of the Judiciary and other state facilities; providing process services and execution of court documents; handling detained persons; and transporting people who are in custody.

Church to hold bazaar Saturday
WAILUKU - Ekalasia O Kupaianaha Church in Wailuku will hold a bazaar from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday with a variety of offerings.
Vendors will sell clothes, ornaments, soaps, Hawaiian handbags, jewelry, handmade cards, flowers, plants, arts and crafts exhibits. Food will include baked goods, plate lunches, produce, breads, and jams and jellies.
There will be a keiki zone with games, a bouncing castle, face painting and body tattoos.

Class for divorced parents presented
WAILUKU - "Yours, Mine and Ours . . . " is the title of a free program to help parents who are divorced or separated and living in separate households.
Open to the public, the program will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 22 at the Kaiser Permanente Maui Lani Clinic.
