MAKAWAO - Tickets are on sale for the ninth annual Growing Dreams Floral & Fashion Extravaganza, which this year will feature floral designer Hitomi Gilliam.

The Maui Youth & Family Services fundraiser will be held Aug. 29 at the Fairmont Kea Lani Resort in Wailea.

Gilliam is a noted Canadian floral designer, lecturer, instructor and an author specializing in contemporary abstract styles. She is a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers (AFID) and is one of only five recipients of an AIFD Design Influence Award. Her demonstrations in the U.S. and Europe draw crowds of as many as 3,000 people.

"We are delighted that we were able to coordinate with Hitomi's calendar," said Jennifer Bleier Lake, event chairwoman. "She is an incredible talent and brings her unique contemporary design to the event."

Gilliam will make floral arrangements, which will be auctioned or sold.

In addition to Gilliam's presentation, there will be a fashion show with clothes and shoes by Blue Ginger, Water Lily and If the Shoe Fits; the showing of a video made by local filmmaker Shan Liljestrand with narration and music by Jake Shimabukuro; and a performance by Napua Greig, musician and kumu hula.

There also will be live and silent auctions.

The VIP tickets have been sold out, but regular-seating tickets are available for $125, which cover the floral presentation, fashion show and luncheon.

Tickets may be purchased online at Web site www.myfs.org by going to the "Growing Dreams" page.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m., with the event starting at 10 a.m.

The event still seeks live and silent auction items as well as sponsors.

For more information, call 280-1175 or 357-5422.

Maui Youth and Family Services offers a foster-family program, prevention and outpatient treatment for substance abuse, and behavioral-health treatment for adolescents and their families.
